NJ: Astroturf

As much as the Astroturf was maligned, it made for a more exciting game, at least in that it made the game faster. Grounders would routinely roll to the wall, and players more often scored from first on doubles. That was part of the key to the Big Red Machine. Although the offensive statistics of those teams were not as stupendous as many people believe, at least in terms of batting average, home runs and the conventional statistics, the team was built very well for where it played. The teams accumulated many walks, and on an Astroturf field, a player could much more often score from first than on a grass field with a dirt infield.
