I didn't expect to like dog racing. It has always seemed like a very
low class, low morals kind of betting game. And in general, the animals are less beautiful than the equestrians that made
animal racing famous.
But while in Tampa some years ago I went with family to the Tampa Greyhound
track. (Dog racing is illegal in Ohio.) The crowd was sparse and most of the betting for small amounts, but we spent a good
portion of the day there, just watching the races. It was extremely interesting for a few reasons.
1) The dogs are pretty stupid. They chase a plastic bunny around the
track, never seeming quite able to catch up to him. And they repeat the same routine every race.
2) The glamour isn't quite like horse racing. There are no triumphant
entrances, and the dogs are so lean that they are downright ugly.
3) Unlike at the horse track, most of the seating is indoors. I'm not
really sure why there's a difference, other than the fact that when we went it was nice not to have to sit in 47-degree cold,
but in Tampa I'd assume that's pretty rare.
